Literacy

Warriappendi School has a strong focus on reading and writing improvement, as per our Site Improvement Plan (SIP).

Teachers at Warriappendi:

  • engage in a whole school approach to literacy learning which aligns with the Science of Language and Reading
  • know and value their students; their backgrounds, the possible factors that may impact on their learning and their unique contributions – including recognising EALD and Aboriginal English
  • have a strong commitment to meet the learning needs of all our students
  • understand Cognitive Load Theory, and the importance of utilising strategies to reduce load on working memory
  • attend Professional Development which supports the implementation of agreed programs
  • liaise with the Speech Pathologist and EALD Hub Coach to improve practice
  • use data from DIBELS, LEAP, and PLD to inform their practice
  • use pedagogical strategies to maximise students’ participation and engagement including explicit teaching, feedback, and differentiation
